Why Panthera Africa Needs a Recovery Wishlist?

On 8 January 2026, a fast-moving and uncontrollable wildfire swept through Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary, causing significant damage to camps and essential infrastructure and resulting in the loss of our primary sources of income. Although we are temporarily closed to visitors, the sanctuary and farm continue to operate daily and our responsibility to the animals in our care and to the team who look after them remains unchanged.

Feeding, specialised nutrition, veterinary care, enrichment, maintenance and staffing continue every single day. These essential costs continue, even as our main sources of income have been disrupted. As we await further clarity and assess the full financial impact of the wildfire, public support plays a very important role in helping us maintain consistent, high standards of care for our animals and safe, efficient operations for our team.

Essential oils - awakening the senses

Essential oils play an important role in our enrichment programme for the animals in our care. Enrichment encourages natural behaviours such as exploring, scent marking and investigating their surroundings. In the wild, animals rely heavily on scent, so introducing new fragrances into their habitats sparks curiosity, encourages movement and keeps them mentally stimulated.This type of sensory enrichment helps prevent boredom and adds variety to their daily environment, creating opportunities for discovery and play.

The fragrance set includes Lavender, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Sweet Orange, Frankincense, Pine Tree, Bergamot, Rosemary, Cinnamon and Grapefruit.

Psyllium Husk - supporting digestion

Derived from the seeds of the Plantago plant, Nature’s Choice Psyllium Husk Powder is naturally high in fibre. This versatile supplement helps support healthy digestion and overall well-being for our Big Cats.

Cardboard Tubes - endless exploration (boxes welcome too!)

Cardboard tubes (and boxes) may seem like simple everyday items, but for our Big Cats they offer wonderful opportunities for enrichment. From hiding treats to creating playful puzzles, these items spark curiosity, encourage problem-solving and keep the cats actively engaged.

Simple enrichment like this adds variety to their environment and supports both their mental and physical wellbeing in a creative and eco-friendly way.

Collapsible Snake Hook

The ASI Collapsible Snake Hook is an important tool that helps our team safely and humanely handle snakes that may occasionally enter the sanctuary. At Panthera Africa we do not kill snakes. Instead, they are carefully guided and relocated away from the animals and visitors, allowing them to continue playing their important role in the ecosystem.

The hook collapses for easy storage and extends to 1.5 metres when in use, making it ideal for safely handling longer snakes while maintaining a safe distance.

Transparent Snake Bucket

These snake handling buckets are used to safely contain smaller venomous snakes during relocation. At Panthera Africa we do not kill snakes. Instead, they are carefully captured and moved away from the sanctuary to a suitable natural habitat where they can continue playing their important role in the ecosystem.

Made from durable plastic, the bucket features a secure lid with four clips and a central handle for safe handling and transport. Ventilation holes allow for airflow, and each bucket is clearly marked with “Danger Venomous Snakes” stickers to ensure safe and responsible use.

Collapsible Snake Tong
